This is my third Dell office in a row. In April 2005, I bought a Dimension 8400 with an Intel Pentium 4 processor at 3 GHz, a huge memory of 1 GB, a hard disk of 160 GB, an LCD screen and Windows XP Pro SP2 32 bits. It cost me £ 1,090.17 (£ 1,147.74 with shipping), which I found cheap at the time. Well, it contained new technologies, including a threading processor, PCi Express graphics, a SATA hard drive and a DVD instead of a CD-ROM drive. This machine worked happily for six years, thanks to a memory upgrade and a new graphics card, whose origin is weak. I replaced it in September 2011 with a Dell Vostro 460 MT with Windows 7 on a Core i5-2500 at 3.3 GHz.
This processor was a big step forward, and it’s still pretty good. It is faster than current chips, such as the Intel Core i7-8550U and Core i5-8350U, with the difference that they are 15W chips for thin laptops, the i5-2500 is a 95W Monster with a big fan. My Vostro 460 MT had 4GB of RAM, a GeForce GT 420 with its own gigabyte of memory, a 1TB hard drive, a DVD and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit for only £ 670.80. It still seems like a good business and could probably last another two or three years. But it has already been processed with 8 GB of additional memory and a new hard drive because the original failed. This could be done with a new graphics card and SSD, and the lack of USB 3 ports makes the copy very slow. Is it wise to continue investing in an old battlefield while money could go to a faster and much quieter PC? No. So, my last Dell is an XPS 8930 with a 6.8 kHz i5-8400 processor with 6 cores, 8 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1050Ti with 4 GB of graphics memory, an accelerated 1 TB hard drive with 16 GB Optane memory, a DVD player and Microsoft Windows 10. The total amounted to £ 727.76. The big difference is the speed of the processor, which has a PassMark score of 11,703. In comparison, the i5-2500 got 6,303 and the Pentium 4 only 489, although they all have approximately the same clock speed. The hard drives have become so big that I do not care: I only filled the last half. And the price of desktop computers is very reasonable, especially if you pay the cost for six years, 312 weeks or perhaps 15,000 hours.
